After a chilly start to 2026 with widespread snow cover in the UK, new weather data indicates that residents in 15 counties are bracing for another bout of heavy snowfall. Recent weather maps highlight regions in Scotland and Northern Ireland as likely to experience wintry weather conditions in the upcoming days. Specifically, the Scottish Highlands are expected to continue having snow cover, with additional snowfall predicted.

Following a period of intense cold and significant snowfall, milder temperatures are anticipated across most of the UK this week. The latest weather forecasts suggest that 12 counties in Scotland, spanning from Inverness to Ayrshire, could see snowfall on Thursday. While most of the snow is expected to be light, some areas like Midlothian and west Lothian may experience heavier snow conditions. In Northern Ireland, both County Antrim and County Down are also at risk of snowfall according to the weather maps.

Fortunately, England and Wales are likely to avoid snowfall, though bands of rain are expected to move across the UK, with coastal regions facing the brunt of the precipitation. The Met Office forecasts “wet and windy weather pushing northeastwards” on Thursday, followed by blustery showers on Friday, particularly in the southern regions. The agency has also issued warnings about potential flooding due to heavy rain and snowmelt following Storm Goretti.

Recently, a red weather warning was issued for the South West due to gusts of up to 100mph and “dangerous, stormy” winds. The Met Office cautions that as temperatures rise, the combination of snowmelt and heavy rain across northern UK regions could lead to flooding. It is crucial for residents in these areas to remain vigilant and prepared for potential flooding risks.
