Andy Murray, a two-time Wimbledon champion, has announced his intention to transition from professional tennis to golf following his retirement. The 38-year-old, who retired after the last year’s Olympics and briefly coached Novak Djokovic, is now dedicated to enhancing his golf skills.
Although Murray has taken part in various celebrity golf events over the past 18 months, he concedes that becoming a professional golfer is improbable. Nevertheless, he retains aspirations of engaging in the sport in a different capacity. During an appearance on The Romesh Ranganathan Show, Murray expressed his desire to work as a caddie for a professional golfer and participate in The Open.
“I’m contemplating becoming a golf caddie, ideally for a professional golfer at some point,” he remarked. “I have a passion for golf, and if you have that passion, it would be a fantastic job.”
The tennis icon mentioned that Robert MacIntyre is his dream partner, having previously partnered with his compatriot at the BMW PGA Championships. When asked about the potential overshadowing of the player he supports due to his celebrity status, Murray responded by saying that although initial excitement may arise, it would eventually become the norm.
Speculation has arisen regarding Murray’s possible attempt to qualify for The Open in the future; however, he promptly dismissed these suggestions. He clarified, “I don’t aspire to compete in The Open. I aim to attempt regional qualifying at some point, as a few of my friends have done.”
Murray emphasized the vast skill gap between amateur players like himself and professional golfers, acknowledging that even players with a handicap of two or three are far below the standards of Tour professionals.
