The Trades Union Congress (TUC) chief emphasized the need for the UK to strengthen its relationship with Europe due to concerns about the reliability of US President Donald Trump as a partner. Paul Nowak, the TUC head, highlighted the desire among both Leavers and Remainers to address the shortcomings of the Tory Brexit deal that has persisted for almost ten years.

Nowak proposed the consideration of a UK-EU customs union to facilitate tariff-free trade while ensuring common standards for traded goods. These remarks followed a departure by Wes Streeting from Keir Starmer’s stance, indicating support for a customs union agreement with the EU. Nowak stressed the importance of a robust working relationship with Europe, particularly given the uncertainties stemming from Trump’s presidency.

The TUC General Secretary underscored the need for the government to explore all options, including a customs union, to benefit various industries that rely on seamless trade with Europe. He highlighted the impact on everyday consumers, pointing out the potential Brexit-related price effects on goods. Nowak dismissed lingering Brexit divisions, emphasizing the practicality of pursuing a closer trading partnership with the EU for the benefit of working people.

He emphasized the imperative of rectifying the flawed Brexit deal left by the Tories to secure the best possible outcome for the country’s workforce. Nowak reiterated that the focus should be on enhancing the UK’s economic standing, political relations, and national security, particularly in light of Trump’s perceived unreliability. Collaboration with Europe was deemed vital not only economically but also in addressing shared concerns, such as the situation in Ukraine.
