“Rory McIlroy Introduces New Major Award on DP World Tour”

Rory McIlroy has endorsed a new accolade to recognize the top-performing DP World Tour player in the Majors each season, with the exception that the Masters champion is ineligible for the award.

After becoming the first European to achieve the career Grand Slam by winning at Augusta in April, McIlroy’s namesake award was revealed by the DP World Tour ahead of the season-ending DP World Tour Championships. The award honors the tour member who excels in all four Major Championships in a given year.

Despite the temptation, McIlroy acknowledged his ineligibility with a smile, stating that the decision was collectively made to exclude him from contention. This award marks the fifth accolade named after a player on the DP World Tour, recognizing McIlroy’s on-course accomplishments and unwavering support for the tour.

Expressing his gratitude, McIlroy described the honor as significant, highlighting the progression from striving for other awards like the Sir Henry Cotton Award and Harry Vardon Trophy to now having an award bearing his name.

The 36-year-old golfer, who recently completed the career Grand Slam, shared that the idea for the award was presented by DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings following his victory at Augusta. McIlroy emphasized the importance of leaving a lasting legacy associated with the tour even after his playing days.

McIlroy is currently aiming to defend his title at the DP World Tour Championships and secure his fourth consecutive Race to Dubai win, which would be his seventh overall, surpassing his tie with Seve Ballesteros. Reflecting on the sustained excellence required for such achievements, McIlroy praised the competitive landscape he navigated, particularly during the golden age of European golf.

Following a strong performance in Abu Dhabi, McIlroy expressed confidence in his game heading into the upcoming tournament, aiming to maintain his momentum from the weekend.
