“London Bridges Cautioned for New Year’s Eve Fireworks Viewing”

Revellers aiming for a clandestine vantage point of London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks have been cautioned that they will not have a clear view of the dazzling display. Every year, throngs of people flock to Tower Bridge in hopes of catching a glimpse of the spectacle, only to realize that their view is obstructed by the river bend and towering structures. The City Bridge Foundation, responsible for overseeing and maintaining five of London’s bridges, has issued similar alerts regarding London Bridge and Southwark Bridge.

Paul Martinelli, the chair of the charity, emphasized the potential risks posed by overcrowding on the bridges, urging caution to all users, including pedestrians and drivers. He advised revelers seeking a fireworks spectacle to opt for watching the BBC’s coverage from the comfort of their homes or at one of London’s many bars and restaurants.

Precautionary measures are being implemented, with the Millennium Bridge closing to the public from 7pm on December 31, and access to Blackfriars Bridge restricted to ticket holders. The closure of central London bridges may occur abruptly due to safety considerations, as reported by MyLondon. Commander Umer Khan from the City of London Police emphasized that these bridges are outside the event zone and will remain open to traffic, urging the public to refrain from stopping on the bridges on New Year’s Eve in anticipation of the fireworks display.

In light of public safety concerns, popular viewing spots like Primrose Hill and Greenwich Park will also be closed. Official viewing areas are limited to specific locations along Victoria Embankment, Waterloo and Westminster bridges, and sections of the South Bank.

The event has garnered significant interest, with the final batch of tickets selling out after their release in late November. Securing entry has become increasingly challenging, leading to inflated resale prices reaching over £250. Mayor Sadiq Khan previously warned against purchasing tickets from unauthorized sources, as ticket holders risk being denied entry on the night due to counterfeit tickets.

The official New Year’s Eve fireworks celebration in London originated in 2000 to mark the millennium and has since been an annual tradition. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic, the event continued each year, adapting to multiple locations and a virtual broadcast without a live audience.
