Shaun Murphy Upset with Champion of Champions Scheduling

Shaun Murphy expressed frustration towards Matchroom regarding the scheduling of the Champion of Champions event on Monday. This was due to his recent participation in China’s International Championship quarter-finals just four days prior.

The Magician was unexpectedly placed in the tournament’s first match and suffered a 4-1 defeat against Lei Peifan. Murphy, aged 43, disclosed that he was informed about his Monday match while returning from Nanjing, learning about the event’s lineup on the same morning.

After his loss, Murphy criticized Matchroom’s handling of the tournament format, stating his disappointment with the lack of communication and what he perceived as disrespect towards him, especially considering the unique circumstances of his recent travels.

In response to Murphy’s outburst, Matchroom issued a statement acknowledging his frustrations and emphasizing their commitment to prioritizing player satisfaction and fairness in the event’s organization and group seeding.

Meanwhile, other players who did not participate in the previous week’s International Championship, such as Mark Williams, Mark Allen, and Alfie Burden, are set to play in the Champion of Champions later in the week, unlike Murphy who played on the opening day.

The opening day of the Champion of Champions also saw World No. 1 Judd Trump securing a 4-1 victory over Bai Yulu, advancing to face Lei in the evening session. Tuesday’s matches feature Kyren Wilson vs Jack Lisowski, among other exciting matchups.
