Knife-point robberies in the most affected areas have decreased by 15% compared to the same period last year, according to recent data. The Home Office has reported the closure of over 3,000 county lines networks, resulting in approximately 2,500 fewer individuals facing the threat of robbery with a knife.
Furthermore, efforts to combat drug smuggling operations, often involving the exploitation of children, have led to more than 8,000 arrests. The data indicates that over 4,000 young people and vulnerable individuals have received assistance to steer them away from gang involvement.
Praising the progress, Policing Minister Sarah Jones affirmed that the government is fulfilling Labour’s commitment to addressing knife crime effectively. The success in reducing criminal activities has been attributed to strategic planning and decisive actions.
Under the County Lines Programme initiated by the Government, a total of 3,042 county lines have been dismantled, resulting in 8,226 arrests since July 2024. Notably, 923 knives have been confiscated, and 4,323 safeguarding referrals have been initiated.
The Labour Party’s promise to cut knife crime in half within a decade has been met with approval from individuals like Pooja Kanda, who lost her son to a tragic knife attack. She commended the government’s efforts and emphasized the importance of collaboration between stakeholders to enhance safety measures for young people and communities.
Kate Wareham, a key figure at the anti-knife crime organization Catch22, lauded the progress made by the Home Office in combatting county lines operations and protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation. The effective implementation of the County Lines Programme has significantly curtailed criminal activities and improved community safety.
In a targeted initiative, the Government launched the Knife-Enabled Robbery (KER) Taskforce in October 2024, focusing on seven high-risk areas, including London, Greater Manchester, the West Midlands, West Yorkshire, and the British Transport Police. Notably, these areas have seen a 15% decline in knife-enabled robberies, showcasing the positive impact of strategic interventions.
