Britons are bracing for heavy snowfall in a new Arctic surge, as forecasts indicate over 10 inches of snowfall and temperatures plummeting to -6C.
The UK encountered a frosty start to 2026, with widespread weather alerts for Storm Goretti last week, amid freezing conditions nationwide. Following a brief period of milder weather, more snowfall is on the horizon.
Maps depict low-pressure systems moving from the north and west, ushering in unsettled weather and snow as cold air from the Arctic converges with moisture moving southward.
Anticipated snowfall on January 22 is expected to hit central and northern Scotland, as well as northern England, with snow intensifying throughout the day and advancing into eastern regions.
Scotland could see up to 30cm of snow, while northern England may experience around 14-15cm, accompanied by frigid temperatures. Weather charts project temperatures plunging to -6C in Scotland and hovering in the low single digits in the mildest parts of southern England.
The Met Office cautions of potential winter hazards in its January 17-26 forecast, predicting changeable conditions across the UK. The outlook suggests a likelihood of heavy rain in western regions, with intermittent windy spells. Periods of drier weather are probable, primarily in the east.
This week, wet and cold conditions are anticipated, with lingering flooding risks following Storm Goretti. Tuesday night is expected to bring scattered showers in northern Scotland, persistent rain in southern England, clear skies elsewhere, and the possibility of fog patches in the south alongside widespread frost.
Tomorrow is forecasted to be cloudy with rain and drizzle in the south, while the day will begin dry before rain moves in from the west later in the afternoon.
