Meteorologists are predicting a return of the severe winter weather event known as the ‘Beast from the East’ that hit Britain in 2018. The forecast indicates that a combination of high pressure over Scandinavia and chilling Easterly winds originating from Poland and Ukraine will move towards the UK, potentially bringing significant snowfall lasting up to ten days.
While the arrival of the major snowstorm is not yet confirmed, there are concerns that if it does materialize, the eastern regions of the UK will bear the brunt of the impact before the heavy snow extends across the rest of the country.
This alert follows recent Amber weather warnings issued for parts of the UK last week, resulting in school closures and flight cancellations at various airports due to adverse weather conditions.
According to Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, the potential scenario involves the development of high pressure over Norway and Sweden leading to the influx of Easterly winds by January 21. However, Dale emphasized the need for sustained snowfall, not just cold winds, for the true impact of a ‘Beast from the East’ to be felt.
Dale outlined three possibilities for the upcoming weather patterns at the end of the month, indicating varying outcomes ranging from cold winds to a prolonged snow event affecting the UK.
The potential scenarios could result in extensive snowfall, especially if a sustained ‘Beast from the East’ situation occurs, with the snowfall expected to move from east to west across the country over an extended period.
Moreover, the Met Office has issued a Yellow weather warning for icy conditions in western and northern Scotland, while flood alerts and warnings remain in place in other parts of the UK following Storm Goretti’s impact.
In light of the recent weather events, authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with concerns raised regarding potential disruptions and safety hazards caused by the severe winter conditions.
