UK Southern Regions Brace for Heavy Rainfall Today

Share

More than half of the typical January rainfall is set to hit various areas of the UK today. Meteorologists from the Met Office are forecasting up to 50mph of rain to sweep across southern regions including parts of London, Surrey, and Hampshire within a short period. The weather warning for heavy rain is in effect until 10pm for locations like London, Kent, Surrey, East Sussex, and West Sussex, with the possibility of experiencing nearly half of Brighton’s average January rainfall today.

Residents in these areas, particularly in Brighton, are advised to prepare an emergency kit containing essential items such as insurance documents, contact numbers, a flashlight with extra batteries, and necessary medications due to the risk of flooding. Southampton is also under the warning, expecting around half of its usual January rainfall today.

According to the Met Office, a low-pressure system moving northeast across England is expected to bring persistent and heavy rain throughout the day, potentially leading to surface water flooding due to the already saturated ground. Recent rainfalls have triggered flood warnings in several regions, including parts of Argyll and Bute, Gloucestershire, and Worcestershire, with additional alerts issued for areas outside London like Surrey and Essex.

The upcoming weekend is anticipated to be unsettled as well, with windy and rainy conditions clearing by Friday and showers likely on Saturday before drier weather on Sunday. Temperatures are expected to be around average with possible overnight fog in some areas.
