A man who disappeared while swimming on Christmas Day had entered the water to assist a distressed woman, according to a friend’s disclosure.

Matthew Upham, a 63-year-old antiques dealer, is still missing following a rescue operation in Budleigh Salterton, Devon. Emergency services were alerted to swimmers in trouble on Christmas Day morning, resulting in multiple individuals being rescued from rough waters. Despite efforts, two men, aged in their 40s and 60s, could not be located, as confirmed by Devon & Cornwall Police.

Local resident Gail Williams honored Mr. Upham, emphasizing his selfless act on Christmas Day. She mentioned that Upham, along with another man, bravely entered the sea to aid a woman in distress. Williams expressed deep sorrow for Upham’s tragic fate in a place he cherished.

Describing Upham as an “accomplished sea swimmer,” Williams recalled their first meeting seven years ago at her shop in Budleigh Salterton. She highlighted Upham’s dedication to swimming daily and the profound impact of his loss on the community.

Renowned singer Kate Bush, a close friend of Upham, also paid tribute to him, extolling his kindness and zest for life. Bush shared memories of their enduring friendship and Upham’s passion for water activities, emphasizing his respect for the sea.

Operating the appointment-only Matthew Upham Antiques on the High Street of Budleigh Salterton, Upham’s business showcased a diverse collection of chandeliers sourced from European regions. After four decades in London, the enterprise relocated to the coastal town, offering unique antiques to visitors.

Following the incident, the East Devon District Council issued a cautionary message on Facebook, advising residents to exercise caution when swimming, especially during the holiday season. Highlighting the risks of cold water shock and unpredictable weather conditions, the council emphasized the importance of safety measures.

Despite extensive search efforts by the Coastguard, the two missing men remained unaccounted for. Devon and Cornwall Police continued their investigations, providing updates to the families of the individuals involved. The incident led to the cancellation of several planned Christmas and Boxing Day swims in the region due to adverse weather conditions.
