The Met Office has issued a warning for heavy snow showers hitting Britain today, marking the start of a prolonged cold spell with temperatures dropping to -10C.
The new year has kicked off with freezing subzero conditions across most of the UK, with initial snow flurries last night and multiple weather alerts in place for the next four days.
Warnings for snow and ice have been issued for all regions of the United Kingdom, including two amber alerts currently active, set to extend until midday on Monday, with cold temperatures anticipated for the following week.
The sudden drop in temperatures is attributed to cold Arctic air moving in, leading to an extended period of chilly weather where many areas are unlikely to rise above freezing even during daylight hours, according to the Met Office forecasters.
Rebekah Hicks, the Met Office Chief Meteorologist, stated to the Mirror that the UK is experiencing an Arctic blast with ongoing snow and ice warnings, particularly affecting northern Scotland and higher elevated regions, while inland areas are expected to remain mostly sunny and clear.
The cold conditions are forecasted to persist into the upcoming week, with temperatures struggling to rise above freezing during the day and dropping to double-digit negatives overnight in certain locations, prompting advice to stay vigilant with potential icy roads and slippery surfaces.
Weather radar observations from WXCharts indicate temperatures plummeting to -10C in parts of Scotland by Monday evening, with sub-freezing conditions extending throughout the country, including southern England, and snowfall expected in northern and central areas within the next 48 hours, accompanied by widespread ice increasing travel disruption risks over the weekend and into the following week.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber cold health alerts for England until January 6, as the NHS faces additional winter pressures due to weather-related health issues and injuries.
Dr. Agostinho Sousa, the Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, emphasized the importance of checking on vulnerable individuals as the cold weather can significantly impact health, increasing the risks of heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory infections, especially among those over 65 and with pre-existing health conditions.
