Renowned boxer Anthony Joshua has been released from the hospital after a period of observation for minor injuries sustained in a car crash that tragically took the lives of two of his close friends. The regional authorities of Lagos and Ogun states confirmed that Joshua, aged 36, is now recovering at his residence in the country.
Joshua was a passenger in a black SUV involved in a collision with a stationary truck near Lagos, resulting in the fatalities of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, his friends. A statement mentioned that Joshua and his mother paid their respects at a funeral home before the bodies were repatriated to the UK.
The official statement, published on X, stated, “Anthony Joshua was discharged from the hospital late this afternoon despite deep sorrow and heavy emotions over the loss of his close friends. However, he was considered medically fit to continue his recovery at home.”
The post also expressed appreciation for the medical team at Lagoon Hospital Ikoyi for their care of Joshua and the other injured individuals, praising their professionalism and quality of service.
Following the car crash involving Joshua, Nigerian authorities initiated a search for the driver of the truck responsible for the accident, which led to injuries and fatalities among the occupants.
While the search for the driver is ongoing, the authorities have located the damaged vehicle at Sagamu car pound. The truck, registered to a company in Lagos, displayed significant damage, with visible police tape surrounding it.
Joshua, a British Nigerian, was on vacation in Nigeria following his victory over Jake Paul in Miami, Florida. He sustained minor injuries in the crash but escaped serious harm, according to the police.
Police investigations revealed that the truck involved was illegally parked prior to the accident. A Nigerian police officer stated, “The truck was parked illegally on the highway, the driver was absent during the collision, and it was not a breakdown situation.”
The search for the truck driver follows the discharge of Joshua’s car driver from the hospital, with potential legal repercussions for reckless driving being considered.
CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, a spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force, informed the media that “Anthony Joshua’s driver has been discharged from the hospital and is providing his statement.”
