“Binman Warns: Common Recycling Mistakes to Avoid”

Share

To avoid issues with waste disposal, it is crucial to recycle correctly and avoid common mistakes. Recently, a waste collector cautioned the public that their recycling efforts could be in vain if they unknowingly include certain items in their recycling bags.

It may come as a surprise that not all materials can be mixed in plastic recycling bins, contrary to popular belief. The No1 Binman on TikTok, who gained fame for his informative videos, pointed out a specific item that should be kept out to prevent contamination of recyclables.

In an online video, he emphasized the importance of being aware of what can and cannot be recycled. It is possible that you have been incorrectly recycling certain items for years without realizing the consequences it may entail.

The binman explained, “Crisp packets should not be included in your recycling. These should be taken to supermarkets for proper disposal as they are a different type of plastic.”

He further advised against placing items like carrier bags, film, bubble wrap, polystyrene, and certain types of plastics in recycling bins due to the inefficient recycling process for such materials.

It is essential to double-check before depositing items to prevent contamination of recyclables and avoid the disappointment of having your waste rejected for collection.

Crisp packets, being made of mixed metallised plastic film, are not suitable for regular household recycling. However, specialized schemes like TerraCycle or supermarket drop-off points that handle “soft plastics” can provide proper recycling solutions for such items.

Waste collectors may refuse to collect waste that is contaminated with improper items or if the bins are excessively heavy or contain additional waste items beside them. Such rejections can lead to unemptied bins or the need for corrective actions to rectify the issue.

Incorrect disposal practices, such as placing non-recyclable items in recycling bins, can result in bins not being collected. Overfilled or overweight bins are often left unattended as well.

In case your waste is not collected, your local council may provide guidance on rectifying the issue before the next collection date.

Familiarizing yourself with the recycling guidelines in your area is crucial to ensure proper waste management and avoid potential rejections of your waste bins.
