The UK government is contemplating a ban on Elon Musk’s X social media platform following the creation of sexualized deepfake images of children using its artificial intelligence chatbot. Downing Street confirmed that all options, including a potential boycott of X, are under consideration, with strong support for media regulator Ofcom to intervene.
Ofcom has initiated urgent discussions with Musk’s X and xAI concerning serious concerns about its AI tool, Grok, generating inappropriate images of minors on the platform. The regulator highlighted issues with Grok’s chatbot feature, developed by xAI, which produces explicit images of individuals, including children.
In response, the Prime Minister’s spokesperson condemned the situation, emphasizing that exposure to intimate deepfakes online is unacceptable. Urgent action is demanded from X to address the problem, with full government backing for Ofcom to enforce measures against firms failing to safeguard UK users.
Commenting on the potential discontinuation of the app’s use by the government, the spokesperson reiterated that all options are on the table. Notably, while TikTok is already prohibited on government devices, some officials, like Keir Starmer, maintain accounts on the platform.
The government’s stance comes following Technology Secretary Liz Kendall’s directive for Musk’s social media company to promptly address the issue. She underscored the UK’s zero-tolerance policy towards offensive online content, emphasizing the collective effort required to combat such material.
Meanwhile, users of X reportedly triggered Grok to generate images of children in revealing attire. Musk’s acknowledgment of lapses in safeguards and the commitment to rectify them swiftly was echoed by a statement from Grok’s X account, emphasizing compliance with regulations and enhancing content safety measures.
Musk announced the release of a new Grok version, urging users to update their applications, although the specifics of these updates remain undisclosed. The ongoing developments underscore the imperative of regulating deepfake content to ensure a safer online environment.
