Keir Starmer has assured that Members of Parliament will have a say through a vote before any potential deployment of troops to Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
The Prime Minister confirmed this commitment in Parliament following the signing of a joint declaration in Paris by the UK, France, and Ukraine’s President Volodymr Zelensky, allowing for the presence of troops after a ceasefire. Starmer announced plans for the establishment of military hubs and secure facilities on Ukrainian soil to assist Kyiv in its defense efforts.
During today’s PMQs session, Starmer emphasized that any decision to send British troops to the region would undergo a parliamentary vote. He outlined that a legal framework would be necessary for deployment, which would occur post-ceasefire to bolster Ukraine’s capabilities, conduct deterrence operations, and establish protective military installations. Starmer also pledged to provide a statement to the House promptly.
Addressing concerns raised by Tory leader Kemi Badenoch regarding troop commitments for a peacekeeping force in Ukraine, Starmer reiterated that troop deployment would only happen after a ceasefire to support Ukraine’s defense capabilities. The exact number of troops would be determined based on military plans, to be shared with Parliament before any deployment decision.
Starmer reiterated his commitment to parliamentary oversight, stating that a debate and vote in the Commons would be mandatory if a legal instrument was required for deployment. In Paris, he highlighted the importance of unity among European and American allies in supporting peace efforts alongside President Zelensky, emphasizing the challenges that lie ahead despite progress made in peace negotiations.
Starmer emphasized the need for Putin to end hostilities for a lasting peace agreement, condemning recent attacks on Ukraine that have resulted in civilian casualties and the disruption of essential services. He underscored the resolve to pursue peace despite provocations, stressing the importance of continued efforts to secure a sustainable peace deal.
