“Former Russian PM: UK and France troop deployment leaves Putin uncertain”

Share

A former Russian Prime Minister has commented on the recent decision by the UK and France to deploy troops in Ukraine, noting that it has had a significant impact and has left Vladimir Putin uncertain about his next steps.

Mikhail Kasyanov highlighted that the move by the coalition of willing nations has created a sense of uncertainty for the Russian leader. This development followed statements by Keir Starmer regarding potential military hubs in Ukraine post a peace agreement.

During an interview on Times Radio, Mr Kasyanov emphasized that Putin may need to adjust his approach in response to recent developments. He noted the strategic shift in approach by the coalition in Paris, highlighting the separation of security guarantees for Ukraine from other issues as a key development.

The former Prime Minister also pointed out the reinforcement of transatlantic unity, with a nod to Steve Witkoff, a representative of former President Trump, confirming the agreements reached. The decision to place troops on the ground was underscored as a pivotal move that has left Putin at a loss for immediate response.

In reaction to these developments, Mr Kasyanov emphasized the continued support for Ukraine by European nations with the backing of the US, indicating significant pressure on Putin to adjust his stance in light of recent events.

The joint declaration signed by the UK, France, and Ukraine in Paris outlines plans to establish protected facilities for military equipment to assist Kyiv in its defense efforts. This move follows a commitment to deploy boots on the ground post a ceasefire agreement.

Conversely, Dmitry Rogozin, a close associate of Vladimir Putin, criticized Keir Starmer for proposing the deployment of British troops in Ukraine, warning of potential risks of missile strikes from Russia.

Furthermore, a blueprint has been unveiled detailing plans for a multinational force led by European nations to support Ukraine, with potential involvement of non-European countries, including the US. The blueprint also includes support for ceasefire monitoring and long-term backing for the Ukrainian army.

Keir Starmer expressed optimism about the collaboration between European and American allies, alongside President Zelensky, towards peace efforts. While progress has been made, he acknowledged that challenges still lie ahead in achieving lasting peace.
