“Cybercriminals Targeting EE Users with Scam Texts”

Share

EE mobile users are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Reports indicate that cybercriminals are targeting EE customers with urgent messages threatening the loss of EE reward points unless immediate action is taken. According to cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender, these messages are part of a scheme to deceive users into clicking on malicious links that redirect to fake websites designed to steal login information.

The success of this scam relies on creating a sense of urgency, pressuring individuals to act without careful consideration. Bitdefender warned that scammers are utilizing tight deadlines to instill panic and prompt swift responses, leading recipients to fraudulent sites instead of legitimate EE platforms.

It is crucial for EE users to recognize that genuine alerts from EE would only appear within official accounts, not via unsolicited texts. Any message pressuring quick action or featuring countdowns should raise suspicion. If users receive suspicious texts, EE advises forwarding them to 7726 and deleting them immediately.

This type of scam has previously targeted EE customers, with incidents reported earlier this year where individuals received convincing fake messages related to reward points. Users have shared their experiences of unwittingly engaging with these scams, highlighting the importance of vigilance when interacting with such messages.

EE has clarified that they do not operate a points program and has provided examples of scam messages circulating, such as those offering free points with impending expiration dates to lure recipients into clicking malicious links.

To safeguard against such scams, EE recommends never clicking on unknown links in text messages, refraining from replying to suspicious messages, avoiding calls to the numbers provided in such messages, and never sharing personal or financial information.

EE users are advised to exercise caution and remain vigilant to protect themselves from falling victim to these fraudulent schemes.
