McDonald’s customers are expressing dissatisfaction following a widely shared post indicating that the price of a hash brown has surged to nearly £2 in certain branches.
The viral post featured a snapshot of a McDonald’s menu board, showcasing the hash brown priced at £1.99 in the specific outlet visited by the individual.
With over 459,000 views, the post was accompanied by a remark stating, “£2 for a single hash brown. We’re officially finished.” Responses included one person stating, “It’s gotten out of control; it used to be a budget-friendly choice,” while another mentioned, “For that price, you might as well get the sausage sandwich.” A third commenter simply labeled it as “madness.”
Another individual mentioned, “Those hash browns are fantastic, but £2 is too much. I remember when they were 59p.”
In response to the pricing concerns, a McDonald’s spokesperson explained that franchisees have the autonomy to set prices in a significant portion of their restaurants, emphasizing their shared commitment to delivering a quality dining experience and value to customers.
This development follows McDonald’s announcement of forthcoming changes to the MyMcDonald’s Rewards program, where the points required for redeeming free items will increase. Currently, items like a Big Mac, Double Fillet of Fish, Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin, and Nine Chicken Nuggets can be obtained for 5,500 points. However, starting March 17, 6,500 points will be needed for these items. Customers earn 100 points for every £1 spent at McDonald’s.
Additionally, the points threshold for other items will also rise, such as a Medium Coffee or Small Fries increasing from 1,500 to 2,000 points, a regular McFlurry or Apple Pie from 2,500 to 3,500 points, and a Double Cheeseburger or McChicken sandwich from 4,000 to 5,000 points.
A McDonald’s representative informed The Sun that the adjustments to the loyalty scheme are in response to escalating food and supply costs. While the points requirement has been raised across all tiers, new redemption options like Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and the Sausage Sandwich have been introduced to provide customers with more choices.
