“UK Braces for Impact: Storm Chandra Warnings Issued”

Share

The UK is preparing for more inclement weather as Storm Chandra approaches this week. The storm, expected to have the most impact today, has already prompted the Met Office to issue numerous amber and yellow weather warnings for parts of Wales and England.

Storm Chandra is anticipated to bring strong winds and heavy rain, potentially leading to dangerous driving conditions. While many drivers are aware of the risks associated with heavy rainfall, the dangers of driving in high winds may be underestimated.

Powerful winds, particularly sudden and intense gusts, can impact a vehicle’s stability and movement on the road and in the air. Thus, it is essential to take measures to protect your car from the wind.

To promote driver safety, the AA has provided guidance, advising motorists on items to avoid bringing along. One such item is the roof box, a common storage accessory attached to vehicles.

The AA recommends leaving the roof box at home during windy conditions as it can exacerbate the effects of crosswinds on your vehicle. They also emphasized the risks posed by wind, particularly on exposed road sections and when passing tall vehicles.

The AA highlighted the importance of reducing speed in windy conditions, as strong gusts can lead to significant deviations from the intended course. Overtaking in high winds was also cautioned against due to the potential risks involved.

The AA’s advice coincides with the naming of Storm Chandra by the Met Office ahead of its anticipated impact in the UK this week. The storm is projected to make landfall on Monday night and persist into Tuesday, with southwest Wales among the regions expected to be affected.

Met Office forecaster Paul Gundersen warned of various hazards accompanying Storm Chandra, including strong winds affecting specific regions and heavy rain falling on already saturated ground in certain areas. Gundersen urged people to stay updated on weather forecasts and warnings in their respective areas to stay safe.
