During her visits to Finland and Norway, Cooper urged allies to enhance security measures against aggressive actions by Russia and China in the region. Recent tensions heightened over territorial control in the High North following Donald Trump’s expressed interest in Greenland for bolstering U.S. security.
The warming Arctic seas have unlocked shipping routes and exposed valuable resources, sparking a competition for influence in the area. Russia has been active in militarizing the region and utilizing it as a pathway for its clandestine fleet to transport oil and gas, avoiding sanctions.
In a recent incident, the UK supported the U.S. coastguard in intercepting the Bella 1 tanker near British waters. Cooper affirmed the UK’s commitment to bolstering Arctic security alongside allies to deter threats from figures like Vladimir Putin and safeguard national interests and infrastructure.
Emphasizing the importance of addressing emerging challenges, Cooper stressed the critical role of Arctic security as a transatlantic partnership issue for both Britain and NATO. She highlighted the united front presented by the alliance in confronting evolving threats and ensuring collective safety.
During her trip, Cooper is scheduled to meet with border guards in Finland securing NATO’s eastern flank against Russia before proceeding to Norway to observe Royal Marines engaged in live training exercises at Camp Viking. The military base serves as the year-round operational center for the UK Commando Force, providing essential cold weather training for up to 1500 personnel.
