Millions of people in the UK could soon encounter snow as weather forecasts indicate the possibility of a significant winter storm known as the ‘Beast from the East.’
According to the GFS weather model, a large blizzard is projected to develop to the east of the UK on February 9, moving to cover extensive areas of the country by 9 am. The forecast indicates that Scotland, northern England, eastern England, and North Wales are likely to experience the initial snowfall, with the storm expected to persist for several hours.
By 9 pm on the same day, snowfall is anticipated in London, Bristol, the East Midlands, East Anglia, and Wales. However, the most intense snow showers are predicted to occur in Scotland and the northeast regions, including Newcastle, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.
On February 10, the focus of the snowfall is expected to shift to the southeast, with London facing prolonged wintry showers. By the end of the cold spell, approximately 90% of the UK could have snow cover.
Snow coverage maps for 6 am on February 10 show widespread snow accumulation across the UK, with areas such as the North Wales hills, northern England, and Scotland expecting the highest snowfall. Projections suggest that snow depths could reach 39cm in the North Pennines and 33cm in the Scottish Highlands, while areas in central and southern England may see accumulations of up to 1cm.
The Met Office has warned of an increasing risk of snow as February progresses. The forecast indicates unsettled weather with showers, rain, and possible snow in the north, with temperatures remaining close to average. Towards the latter part of the period, colder conditions are expected, with a higher likelihood of snowfall, particularly in northern regions.
