A recent report by consumer group Which? reveals that the major mobile networks, including EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, are falling behind smaller competitors in terms of overall performance. The study, based on feedback from over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide, indicates that lesser-known providers offer better value and superior customer service.
The survey aimed to assess how well different mobile service providers meet customer expectations. It found that the established “Big Four” networks are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of customer satisfaction and service quality.
According to the rankings from Which?, Talkmobile claimed the top spot, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Among the major providers, EE performed the best, securing the ninth position, while O2 and Three ranked lower on the list.
A key factor highlighted in the report is pricing, with customers on the Big Four networks paying an average of £16 per month for SIM-only deals, compared to just £9 for users on smaller networks. Despite the lower prices, many smaller providers utilize the infrastructure of major networks, ensuring comparable signal strength and service quality without the premium cost associated with well-known brands.
The study also emphasizes the ease of switching providers, with some customers able to change networks in as little as 10 minutes. For instance, one respondent mentioned switching from O2 to a SMARTY plan, saving approximately £200 annually after a sudden price increase by the former provider.
Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, noted the consistent superiority of smaller providers in customer service and affordability compared to larger mobile firms. She encouraged customers, especially those nearing the end of their contracts, to consider switching to providers offering better value and service.
