A grand jury in Los Angeles County has charged Nick Reiner with murder in the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, alleging that he had planned the attack. The indictment, issued on July 20 after secret deliberations, was revealed when Nick Reiner, aged 32, pleaded not guilty.
Rob Reiner, known for his roles as a director and actor, and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, were fatally stabbed in their Brentwood home in Los Angeles on December 14. Nick Reiner was taken into custody shortly after the incident and formally charged two days later.
The grand jury indictment marks a significant progression towards a trial, enabling prosecutors to bypass the preliminary hearing process in California, where evidence is publicly presented. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed the gravity of the situation, highlighting the betrayal involved in the accused killing the very individuals who trusted and loved him.
The unsealed indictment discloses minimal new information about the case, particularly the assertion of lying in wait, making Reiner eligible for the death penalty. However, prosecutors have not yet confirmed if they will pursue this ultimate punishment. The indictment mentioned the use of a knife in the crime but did not elaborate on the details surrounding the lying in wait accusation.
Numerous fundamental inquiries about the incident remain unanswered in the public domain, with motives undisclosed and limited leaks from both sides. The Los Angeles County chief medical examiner expressed a desire to release the autopsy reports but has been prohibited by a court order.
Amidst these legal proceedings, Reiner is seeking funds from a trust established by his parents to aid in his legal defense. A court petition revealed that the trustees overseeing the trust have denied Reiner access to the funds without valid justification. The trust, valued at a minimum of $1.5 million US, was designated for Nick Reiner, even if his parents were alive.
In an effort to secure the services of prominent defense lawyer Alan Jackson, Reiner is challenging the trustees’ decision through a legal petition. A hearing on this matter is scheduled for the upcoming week.
The L.A. County Public Defender’s Office, representing Reiner, declined to comment on the indictment.
