A murder trial involving the killing of renowned rapper Tupac Shakur commenced in Las Vegas, nearly three decades after his tragic death. Duane (Keffe D) Davis, aged 63, is facing a murder charge related to Shakur’s 1996 death. Davis, who has been in custody since 2023, has pleaded not guilty to the allegations. The trial, held in Las Vegas, kicked off with jury selection and is anticipated to span around a month.
During the trial, prosecutors will not aim to prove that Davis was the shooter but will endeavor to persuade the jury that he held a leadership role within the group responsible for targeting Shakur in the 1996 shooting incident. Despite wearing a blue dress shirt and tie, Davis remained silent next to his attorney as Nevada Judge Carli Kierny questioned a pool of 75 potential jurors about various aspects, including medical issues, language barriers, and conflicts related to jury duty.
Shakur’s cousin, William Leslane, expressed that while the trial might bring some level of accountability, true justice has been significantly delayed. Leslane highlighted the lack of a thorough investigation at the time of Shakur’s murder, emphasizing that justice now feels belated.

In his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” Davis detailed his alleged involvement in the shooting incident. Shakur, a rising star in the rap scene known for hits like “Dear Mama” and “California Love,” had strong ties to West Coast hip-hop. He released several albums during his lifetime and posthumously.
Shakur and Marion (Suge) Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records, were in Las Vegas on the night of the shooting, attending a boxing match before the tragic event occurred. Following an altercation, Shakur was fatally shot, leading to widespread speculation and conspiracy theories surrounding the circumstances of his death. The trial hinges on key pieces of evidence, including Davis’s memoir, interviews related to the book, and statements made to investigators.
