U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced his strong support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, emphasizing that removing him from his position would be a significant error. Trump praised Infantino’s leadership, citing the recent highly successful World Cup under his guidance as evidence of his capabilities. Trump’s endorsement of Infantino came following a joint statement from UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF criticizing Infantino over his involvement in a proposed sale of commercial rights to the World Cup. The three confederations called for an independent review of the situation, expressing concerns over trust issues and the need for leadership that prioritizes the interests of football.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney also expressed doubts about Infantino’s leadership following the controversy surrounding the proposed sale of World Cup rights. Infantino faced backlash after suggesting and then retracting a plan to sell a portion of the World Cup commercial rights. The proposal, which involved connections to Thrive Capital, led to widespread discontent within the football community, prompting threats of tournament boycotts from UEFA, AFC, and CONCACAF.

Despite the criticism, Infantino found support from some federations, including CAF, Mexico, Argentina, Paraguay, Ecuador, and Bolivia. FIFA defended Infantino against allegations and condemned attempts to undermine his leadership. The organization reiterated its commitment to transparency and democratic processes, emphasizing the need to adhere to governing statutes when addressing leadership challenges. Infantino’s supporters highlighted his contributions to football and dismissed unfounded claims against him. While some member associations have expressed confidence in Infantino, others have raised concerns, indicating a divided sentiment within the football world.
