A recent study reveals that flight attendants and pilots face a higher risk of succumbing to radiation-related cancers compared to individuals working with radioactive materials. Cosmic radiation, originating from space, poses a greater exposure threat to individuals flying at high altitudes due to limited atmospheric filtration.
The study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, analyzed data from over 12 million death certificates, highlighting occupations with elevated cancer death rates linked to radiation exposure. Flight attendants exhibited the highest percentage of deaths from radiation-related cancers, followed by pilots, with significantly increased odds for various cancer types associated with radiation exposure.
Contrary to the assumption that excess skin cancer risk among flight crews stems from sunny layovers, the study challenges this notion, suggesting that cockpit environments play a more significant role than leisure destinations. Flight attendants faced a 50% higher likelihood of succumbing to radiation-related cancers, while pilots had a 36% higher risk compared to the general working population.
Limitations acknowledged by the authors include uncertainties regarding individual exposure levels and potential misclassification of occupations on death certificates. The study underscores the challenge of disentangling overlapping exposures, such as cosmic radiation, UV-A light, and circadian disruption, prevalent in these professions.
Furthermore, the study emphasizes the impact of frequent disruptions to the body’s internal clock on cancer risk, exacerbated by jet lag and irregular work schedules. The absence of federal dose limits or monitoring requirements for aircrews’ ionizing radiation exposure raises concerns about managing and mitigating these risks effectively.
Flight attendants’ union leader, Sara Nelson, stresses the need for heightened awareness and responsibility regarding radiation exposure among crew members. Recommendations include regular skin examinations for high-altitude workers, earlier or more frequent mammograms for female employees, and increased vigilance for cancer during medical evaluations of pilots and flight attendants.
