Gord MacIntyre is determined to clinch a national title at the ongoing Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat, Alberta. The Edmonton soccer player, who plays as a left forward for Team Alberta, has set multiple goals for himself at the event that aims to showcase the talents of athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Expressing his gratitude for being part of the games hosted in Medicine Hat, MacIntyre looks forward to engaging in fair play and facing tough competition while hoping for success on the field. The Summer Games, which have been in the planning stages for eight years and have involved extensive travel for approximately 1,700 athletes, have officially kicked off.
The city of Medicine Hat is not only focused on providing a platform for the athletes but also aims to demonstrate its warm hospitality to all participants and visitors. Nearly 1,700 athletes are participating in various sports such as bocce, bowling, powerlifting, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, and softball throughout the week.
The opening ceremonies witnessed vibrant crowds waving provincial flags and cheering enthusiastically at the city’s 6,000-seat hockey arena. After meticulous preparations and the deployment of school buses and delivery trucks carrying essential supplies, the atmosphere was filled with camaraderie and excitement.
Reflecting on the event, Governor General Louise Arbour commended the high level of activity, volunteerism, and sportsmanship on display, describing it as an incredible phenomenon. The sense of community spirit and pride was palpable in Medicine Hat, according to Arbour.
The event not only showcases top-tier athletes representing their provinces but also serves as a platform for volunteers to contribute positively to the community. With over 1,500 local volunteers supporting the games and welcoming participants and their families, the city has embraced the national event wholeheartedly.
