Skate Canada revealed on Wednesday that Mike Slipchuk will be stepping down from his position as high-performance director following the 2026-27 season, marking the end of his 20-year tenure in the role. Slipchuk became a part of Skate Canada in 2006 and during his leadership, Canadian figure skaters achieved remarkable success, securing a total of 10 Olympic and 24 world championship medals.
Notably, Canada clinched four Olympic medals under Slipchuk’s guidance at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, with gold medals being claimed by ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, as well as the skaters in the team event. Virtue and Moir’s gold medal win solidified their status as the most decorated Olympic figure skaters in history, with three gold and two silver medals to their names.
Despite these achievements, Canada has faced challenges in recent Olympic events, failing to secure any medals in Beijing 2022, and settling for one bronze medal earlier this year in Milan Cortina, courtesy of Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier in ice dance.
Over the past two decades, Canada has seen world champions emerge across various disciplines, with notable successes including Patrick Chan’s three consecutive men’s world titles from 2011-2013 and the three gold medals by Virtue and Moir. The most recent world champions from Canada were pairs skaters Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps in 2024.
Following his decision to step down, Slipchuk will continue to contribute in an advisory capacity to aid in the transition to a new high-performance director. Reflecting on his time with Skate Canada, Slipchuk expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the high-performance program, emphasizing the privilege of working alongside exceptional athletes and coaches while cherishing the memories of Canadian athletes proudly standing on the podium with their medals and the national flag.
