Madonna, the reigning queen of pop, is set to reclaim her throne at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Surprisingly, it’s not Taylor Swift but Madonna who leads the nominations with 11 nods for her album “Confessions II” and its accompanying film.
This marks Madonna’s third time as the top nominee at the VMAs, having previously achieved this in 1990 and 1998 with her “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras, respectively. One of her most memorable VMA moments dates back to the inaugural 1984 ceremony when she stunned audiences in a wedding dress and a “Boy Toy” belt buckle while performing “Like a Virgin.”
In a tight race, Madonna surpassed Taylor Swift, who holds the record for the most VMA wins by a solo artist, with nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video “The Fate of Ophelia.” Following closely behind Swift are Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande, each with seven nominations.
Madonna’s nominations this year span various categories, including artist of the year, video of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for “Bring Your Love,” featuring Sabrina Carpenter. The highly anticipated video of the year award will see Madonna’s “Confessions” competing against Taylor Swift’s “Ophelia,” Ariana Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Tears,” Bruno Mars’s “I Just Might,” and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s “Storm.”
Fans can participate in the voting process for 13 categories this year. The winners will be revealed during the live broadcast of the ceremony on September 27, which will air on CBS, MTV, and be streamed on Paramount+.
