U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he, along with a significant group of artificial intelligence industry leaders, reached a voluntary agreement at the White House meeting. The accord includes both internal and external reviews of AI technology.
During a press briefing outside the West Wing, Trump expressed his approval of the industry’s self-regulation efforts, emphasizing the importance of companies policing themselves. The agreement came after a substantial meeting between Trump and key executives from leading tech companies investing heavily in AI infrastructure development, which has faced opposition from communities across the country.
Despite concerns raised by some AI executives about the rapid advancement of the technology, Trump assured that the U.S. government would not impede AI development or impose restrictions. He highlighted the significance of AI in driving technological progress and emphasized the need for the U.S. to maintain its leadership in this field.
Prominent AI executives, including Dario Amodei, Greg Brockman, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk, among others, attended the White House meeting. Trump’s optimism about AI development contrasts with the caution expressed by some industry leaders regarding the safety and regulation of AI technologies.
Following the lunch meeting, Trump mentioned that the executives had agreed on self-regulation and discussed ways to address concerns about data centers in local communities. Additionally, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the company’s focus on safety and cautious progress in AI development.
Geoffrey Hinton, a Canadian-British AI pioneer, questioned Trump’s understanding of AI and highlighted the importance of government oversight in ensuring AI safety. Trump positioned AI development as a global competition, particularly with China, emphasizing America’s leadership in the AI race and signaling a competitive stance towards China in AI innovation.
