Tens of thousands of music enthusiasts gathered at Great Park in Irvine, California, for an extraordinary event dedicated to supporting women’s health, reproductive rights, and combating gender-based violence. Daisy Chain Fields, a charity festival organized by the talented pop star Olivia Rodrigo, aimed to follow in the footsteps of the groundbreaking Lilith Fair from the 1990s, featuring an all-female lineup.

The festival showcased a mix of new and established stars, including queer pop artist Chappell Roan, rapper Doechii, as well as iconic punk and rock acts like Bikini Kill and Garbage. Prior to the festival’s commencement, Rodrigo revealed that they had raised $10 million for the event’s 10 non-profit partners, such as Planned Parenthood and the National Institute for Reproductive Health. This initial sum was generously matched by Melinda French Gates, doubling the total to $20 million.

Rodrigo initially announced the festival back in June, promising performances from renowned artists with all proceeds going towards organizations supporting women and girls. The event featured special appearances, including a duet of “Landslide” with Stevie Nicks and a surprise performance by Alanis Morissette, who sang an updated version of “Ironic” alongside Rodrigo. Sarah McLachlan, the founder of Lilith Fair, also graced the stage with Rodrigo during the festival.

The festival, named “Daisy Chain” to symbolize unity and strength, took place amid a challenging time for women’s reproductive rights in the U.S. following the repeal of Roe v Wade. Amid ongoing legal battles over reproductive rights, the festival served as a beacon of hope for attendees and supporters.

In addition to the music performances, attendees had the opportunity to engage with various art installations, including a LEGO mural and a display honoring the Riot Grrrl movement. A sense of community and activism permeated the festival, with messages of empowerment and solidarity visible throughout the venue.

Despite the scorching temperatures, festival-goers, like digital creator Chase Martinez, described the event as the “best festival ever,” emphasizing the positive atmosphere and sense of purpose that resonated throughout the day. The festival’s success was not only measured in dollars raised but also in the strong message of unity and support for women’s rights conveyed by the artists and attendees alike.
