Quebec Officials Demand Answers After Child’s Tragic Death

Share

Quebec officials are expressing strong disapproval following the tragic passing of a four-year-old boy in the Nunavik village of Ivujivik amidst allegations that the child was refused medical care.

Québec Solidaire representative Sol Zanetti issued a statement demanding clarification regarding the demise of Jusi Padlayat, who reportedly succumbed on August 3. Zanetti highlighted that the child’s parents had taken him to the local clinic multiple times for stomach discomfort, but he was not treated on these occasions.

According to an interview with La Presse, Padlayat’s grandmother, Annie Mangiuk, stated that medical personnel disregarded the family’s concerns and recommended over-the-counter pain relievers for the child. Mangiuk recounted that Padlayat was discovered unconscious on August 1, taken to the local nursing station, and later transferred to the Montreal Children’s Hospital, where he passed away two days later.

Zanetti condemned the prolonged suffering of a child as unacceptable and indicative of potential neglect. He raised concerns about systemic racism within health services and called for a thorough investigation into Padlayat’s death by the Commissioner of Children’s Rights and Welfare.

The Quebec Liberal Party (QLP) also emphasized the need for enhanced healthcare services in northern regions, proposing increased telemedicine options to address such shortcomings. Sandrine Rioux, the QLP candidate for Ungava, which includes Ivujivik, stressed that individuals in Ungava should not face barriers to essential care due to their geographical location.

A statement from the Joyce’s Principle Office underscored the importance of respecting human dignity in healthcare services, drawing parallels between Padlayat’s tragic incident and the case of Joyce Echaquan, an Atikamekw woman who faced racism in a Quebec hospital before her death.

Both the Inuulitsivik Health Centre and the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services have confirmed internal and external reviews into the circumstances surrounding Padlayat’s death. The Quebec coroner’s office is also conducting an investigation, although specific details regarding the cause of death have not been disclosed.

The Montreal Children’s Hospital declined to comment on individual cases, citing privacy concerns.
