“Canadian Athletes Dominate Diamond League Hammer Throw”

Canada’s Camryn Rogers and Ethan Katzberg emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s hammer throw competitions at the recent Diamond League event in Chorzow, Poland. Rogers, hailing from Richmond, B.C., impressed the audience with a winning throw of 77.09 meters on her fourth attempt, showcasing her prowess as the reigning champion of the Olympics, world championships, and Commonwealth Games. American DeAnna Price secured second place with a throw of 75.23 meters, followed by Italy’s Sara Fantini in third at 71.95 meters.

In the men’s hammer throw event, Katzberg, representing Nanaimo, B.C., clinched the win with a best throw of 82.92 meters, adding to his collection of Olympic, world championship, and Commonwealth Games titles. The podium also featured Germany’s Merlin Hummel in second place with 81.25 meters and Hungary’s Bence Halász in third with a throw of 79.44 meters.

The thrilling women’s 100m event saw American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden seizing victory with a season-best time of 10.78 seconds. Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia secured second place with a season-best 10.83 seconds, while Sha’Carri Richardson of the United States, the 2023 world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medalist, finished third in 10.96 seconds.

Furthermore, American Ethan Strand caused an upset by clinching the men’s 1,500m title with a season-best time of 3:30.77. Kenyan Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech and American Cole Hocker took second and third place, respectively, in a tightly contested race.

The Diamond League action will continue with the upcoming meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, on August 27, leading up to the season’s final Diamond League Final in Brussels. The culmination of the global track and field season will be the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship scheduled for September 11-13 in Budapest. Katzberg has secured a spot in the Ultimate Championship as the reigning Olympic and world champion in the men’s hammer throw, while Rogers, despite her illustrious titles, will not compete as the women’s hammer throw is not part of the championship program.
