Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has confirmed that one of the 30 Canadian citizens and permanent residents who went missing following the devastating flooding in the Nepal-China border area has been located safe. The individual had been out of reach due to communication disruptions but managed to establish contact on Tuesday.

The flash floods occurred a week ago following the collapse of a glacier in the Himalayan border region shared by Nepal and China. The aftermath has been severe, with over 1,100 reported fatalities and more than 3,900 individuals still unaccounted for. Nepal’s Foreign Ministry has disclosed that approximately 590 foreign nationals from 39 different countries are among those missing.

In response to the crisis, Canada is set to dispatch over 18,000 emergency supplies from the Canadian Red Cross reserves to the affected region. This aid effort comes in addition to the $5 million in humanitarian assistance already pledged by Ottawa for the relief operations.
