British and Mexican Nationals Face Arrest in Mexican Condo Scheme

A Mexican court has issued arrest warrants for a British national, Harry Robinson, and a Mexican national, Jacqueline Herrera Herrera, who are accused of deceiving a Canadian couple and misappropriating their retirement savings in a condo investment scheme. The warrants were issued in late July by a Quintana Roo state court judge. Despite seeking to challenge the warrants in a Mexican federal court, the ongoing criminal case against them at the state level remains unaffected.

Robinson and Herrera are facing allegations of fraud through deceptive practices, as reported by the state prosecutor’s office. The victims, Cindy Thompson and Glenn Brown from Curve Lake, Ont., entrusted $280,000 to a company co-owned by Robinson and Herrera, who promised lucrative returns on a condo venture in Playa del Carmen that never came to fruition.

Thompson and Brown took legal action against Robinson and Herrera earlier this year following a series of financial transactions in late 2024. Thompson, exploring real estate opportunities in Mexico, engaged with XMEX Investments, a business operated by Robinson, leading to investments in a condo deal that resulted in financial losses for the couple.

While a federal court judge has temporarily halted the arrest warrant against Herrera, the process to dismiss it is ongoing. A court hearing regarding Robinson’s application is scheduled for September 8 in Cancun. Amidst the legal proceedings, conflicting accusations have emerged, with Herrera alleging that Robinson misappropriated funds and Robinson accusing Herrera of embezzlement in late 2025.

Despite attempts at settlement offers by Herrera, including a cash payout and a commercial property in Cancun, Thompson declined the proposals. Expressing frustration with the complexities of the Mexican legal system and the uncertainties surrounding the case, Thompson remains cautiously optimistic about the outcome while grappling with feelings of anxiety and distance from the ongoing legal developments.
