Serena and Venus Williams have once again joined forces at the U.S. Open. The siblings secured a wild card entry into the tournament, where they have previously clinched the doubles title twice.
Serena Williams made a comeback to tennis this summer following a four-year hiatus. The duo was initially set to compete at Wimbledon, but Serena had to withdraw due to a knee injury after her singles match. They also participated in the Cincinnati Open but were eliminated in the initial round.
Having claimed the U.S. Open doubles championship in 1999 and 2009, the Williams sisters boast a strong record of 27-7 in their nine tournament appearances. Their last outing in 2022 saw them exit in the first round, a match anticipated to be Serena’s final appearance at Flushing Meadows.
During the recent mixed doubles event, 44-year-old Serena partnered with Carlos Alcaraz, securing a victory before bowing out in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, 46-year-old Venus is competing in the women’s singles category.
The Williams sisters have a remarkable history in doubles, having clinched 14 Grand Slam titles and Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. They also held the top spot in the women’s doubles rankings for eight weeks.
Although Serena opted out of the singles competition at the U.S. Open, where she has previously claimed six Grand Slam singles titles, she decided to participate in both doubles events given her good form.
Their success as a duo reached its peak a decade after their debut win at the U.S. Open, with victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009, followed by another triumph at Flushing Meadows in the same year. They continued their dominance by securing titles at the Australian Open in 2010 and the French Open, holding all four major trophies simultaneously.
The women’s doubles tournament at the U.S. Open commences on September 3rd.
