Anthony Joshua’s uncle has been frantically searching hospitals to locate his nephew after the family was stunned by news of the heavyweight boxer’s car accident in Nigeria. Tragically, two of Joshua’s close friends lost their lives in the crash caused by a blown-out tire.
Joshua is currently in stable condition at the Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, one of the country’s top medical facilities, where he is expected to remain until the New Year. His personal trainer, Latif “Latz” Ayodele, and sport and exercise rehabilitation coach, Sina Ghami, unfortunately, did not survive the accident.
Local police commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo has confirmed that an investigation into the incident has been launched, stating that the victim has been hospitalized. Joshua sustained minor injuries as a passenger in the collision, which occurred when the Lexus SUV he was traveling in collided with a stationary truck near a petrol station on the bustling Lagos-Ibadan highway.
In the aftermath of the tragic event, Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, shared the family’s ordeal, expressing shock and sadness. He mentioned that Joshua frequently visits his family in Sagamu and that the news of the accident during the holiday season was distressing for everyone in the community.
Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, reassured the public that Joshua is okay following the accident. He mentioned being on a family holiday when he received the news and indicated that further updates on Joshua’s condition would be provided once more information is available.
Eyewitnesses to the collision described the sequence of events, noting that Joshua was in a convoy with another SUV and that the crash resulted in the tragic loss of two individuals. Rescue efforts were initiated by bystanders and authorities arrived promptly at the scene to assist.
