Canada’s top military leader, Gen. Jennie Carignan, disclosed that the Canadian cadet and instructor highlighted by U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth will have the autonomy to determine their response to a contentious social media post. Speaking from a conference of defense chiefs in Victoria, B.C., Carignan affirmed that both individuals are receiving support from the Canadian military following the controversial post and suggested they will have the freedom to react as they see fit.
“We are in discussion with the personnel impacted by various incidents regarding how they wish to proceed,” Carignan stated.
The incident unfolded when Hegseth posted an image from the Cadet Training Centre in Vernon, B.C., featuring two female cadets in uniform with the caption “this is real” alongside a Canadian flag. This post drew negative comments on the individuals’ appearances but also sparked significant backlash from Canadians.
Carignan emphasized that the primary focus is on supporting the affected members and fostering pride in the Canadian Armed Forces and their contributions. She has not directly addressed the matter with U.S. military officials at the conference and has not sought an apology.
The controversy surrounding Hegseth’s post has generated criticism for targeting the youth program to undermine the Canadian Armed Forces and for body-shaming women in the cadet program. The Army Cadet League of Canada denounced the online harassment and mockery directed at cadets and their accomplishments, labeling such behavior as unacceptable.
The national youth-focused cadet program, catering to individuals aged 12 to 18, aims to provide valuable skills and knowledge to bolster confidence and facilitate the transition to adulthood. The circumstances leading to Hegseth’s awareness of the cadet training program’s Instagram account, which had 1,821 followers at the time, remain unclear.
The incident occurs against the backdrop of escalating trade tensions between Canada and the United States, with ongoing disputes and tariffs impacting both countries. The aggressive remarks targeting Canada’s military from various U.S. officials have stirred controversy and drawn sharp rebukes from Canadian leaders and politicians.
As Hegseth faces mounting domestic pressures amidst international conflicts and military leadership changes, the fallout from the social media post underscores the delicate dynamics at play between the two neighboring nations.
