Two Canadian researchers have been recognized in a global image competition that celebrates ecological research through photography. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition honored 11 photos taken by researchers from around the world at different career stages. These images portray animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students engaged in ecological research, and various natural scenes.
Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), won the research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” This image was captured while Brennan was supervising undergraduate students monitoring coastal fish species in St. Andrews, N.B. The picture showcases the students conducting their research under the moonlight, reflecting a moment of curiosity on their faces.
Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, was awarded in the category “protecting our planet” for his photo called “A bridge between past and present.” This composition of 33 drone photos captures the Long Sault Parkway in the upper St. Lawrence River, illustrating the ecosystem and highlighting the impact of human activities on the environment.
Both photographers emphasize the importance of images in communicating science and building public trust in ecological research. Brennan believes that sharing research through visual storytelling can lead to meaningful change, while Tian aims to evoke natural empathy and awareness of ecosystems through his photography.
