“Community-Owned Pubs Gain Traction Against Corporate Control”

Share

The push for community-owned pubs rather than distant shareholders has gained momentum among government officials. Labour MP Alistair Strathern highlighted the success story of the Red Lion in Preston, Hitchin, the UK’s first community-owned pub. Originally slated to become a steakhouse chain, the community rallied in 1983, raising funds through individual shares to purchase the pub and maintain its community-centric ethos.

Since then, the Red Lion has flourished as a focal point for the local community. Strathern commended the pub’s transformation under community ownership, emphasizing the importance of preserving cherished establishments through collective efforts.

Advocates, including the Co-operative Party, stress the significance of community ownership in safeguarding pubs as essential community spaces. Co-operative Party General Secretary Joe Fortune emphasized the role of community ownership in revitalizing community hubs and shifting power away from profit-driven interests.

The Community Right to Buy initiative grants community groups priority in purchasing available pubs, ensuring a year-long window before private buyers can secure the properties. This move aligns with campaigns like Your Pub Needs You by The Mirror, which calls for enhanced support to protect pubs as vital community assets.

Ray Lambe, the pub’s landlord, highlighted the positive impact of community ownership on fostering a stronger sense of community spirit. The model of community ownership, where locals have a stake in the pub’s success, sets a promising precedent for the future of pubs nationwide.
