Conservative Minister Slams Shadow Attorney in Abramovich Case

Share

The Conservative party faced criticism for defending one of its frontbenchers who is representing Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in a legal case. Justice minister Jake Richards strongly condemned shadow attorney general David Wolfson’s involvement, labeling it a clear conflict of interest.

Richards called out Kemi Badenoch’s defense of the situation as weak and urged Wolfson to step down from his shadow cabinet role if he continues representing Abramovich. The issue arose when it was revealed that Wolfson is assisting Abramovich in a legal dispute with the Jersey government regarding assets totaling over £5.3 billion.

In a separate matter, the UK government is seeking more than £2.5 billion from Abramovich for the benefit of Ukraine. Labour leader Keir Starmer issued a warning to Abramovich, demanding the transfer of funds from the Chelsea club sale to aid Ukraine. However, Abramovich argued that the asset transfer cannot proceed until the Jersey proceedings conclude.

Richards criticized the Conservative party’s defense of Wolfson’s dual roles, highlighting the conflict of interest. He emphasized the need for Wolfson to choose between representing Abramovich or serving in the shadow cabinet. Meanwhile, he praised Boris Johnson’s efforts regarding Ukraine but questioned the acceptance of a party member representing Abramovich.

The Ukraine Solidarity Campaign expressed concern over Wolfson’s actions, suggesting potential alignment with Russian interests by the Conservatives. The group called for emergency legislation to prevent sanctioned individuals from abusing the legal system. Abramovich, previously sanctioned over ties to Vladimir Putin, sold Chelsea FC in 2022, with funds frozen amid disagreements with the government.

Richards wrote to Kemi Badenoch, highlighting the compromised position of Wolfson advising on matters related to Abramovich while representing him legally. He urged clarity on the party’s stance regarding Abramovich’s assets and emphasized the importance of avoiding conflicts of interest in politics. The Tories defended Wolfson’s position and accused Labour of hypocrisy, emphasizing their commitment to supporting Ukraine.
