Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated that the current Saudi Pro League season could mark the end of his illustrious football career. The 41-year-old star’s contract with Al-Nassr in Riyadh, inked in December 2022, is set to expire next June, and he expressed doubts about extending it further.
“I believe this may be my final year in football, and I aim to leave behind a remarkable legacy,” Ronaldo shared with Vogue magazine. With an impressive tally of 976 career goals, the Portuguese forward recently tied the knot with his longtime partner, Georgina Rodriguez.
“I have my future plans all set,” Ronaldo stated. “I have numerous pursuits to keep me occupied as transitioning away from football can create a void that requires filling through various activities, not just one.”
He added, “My future endeavors include more leisure, travel, indulging in padel – a sport I enjoy, and continuing to relish the rewards of my hard work over the past 25 years alongside my team.”
The ongoing 2026-27 SPL season marks Ronaldo’s 25th year in professional football. Throughout his career, he has clinched five Ballon d’Or accolades and five UEFA Champions League titles. Ronaldo’s remarkable performance last season, scoring 28 league goals, propelled Al-Nassr to victory in Saudi Arabia, securing his first trophy since joining the club and the first league title for Al-Nassr since 2019.
Upon his return from his wedding celebrations, Ronaldo was absent from Al-Nassr’s first title defense match, which they won 3-0 against Al-Fateh. Coach Ange Postecoglou remarked, “Cristiano’s presence and support are always felt within the team.”
Looking ahead, Ronaldo may feature in the upcoming King’s Cup match against Al-Diriyah on Tuesday. Postecoglou emphasized the importance of recovery, especially with a quick turnaround after the previous game.
Ronaldo’s reflections follow Lionel Messi’s recent revelation about potential retirement due to the passing of his father. Messi, aged 39, expressed uncertainty about his future in football, stating, “I used to solely focus on playing, but now, I am unsure if I will continue for much longer.”
