Ministers are under fire for proposing a massive Chinese embassy with over 200 underground rooms located near vital cables. Members from different political parties are urging the government to intervene to prevent the construction of this facility close to the Tower of London. Concerns have been raised about potential espionage activities due to leaked plans revealing the presence of 208 basement rooms.
Labour’s Sarah Champion, head of the International Development Agency, expressed strong opposition to the embassy, labeling China as a hostile state to the UK. She emphasized the need to resist such actions and not reward bullying behavior. Additionally, nine Labour MPs have written to Communities Secretary Steve Reed warning of potential intimidation tactics against dissidents if the embassy is approved.
The Conservative party has raised fears that the mega-embassy could serve as a platform for economic warfare. Shadow Home Office minister Alicia Kearns highlighted the risks associated with the embassy’s proximity to crucial cables that carry sensitive data, potentially providing the Chinese Communist Party with an opportunity for economic aggression.
In response to security concerns, Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook refrained from commenting on the ongoing case but emphasized the importance of maintaining a consistent stance on China. He acknowledged the threats posed by China to UK national security while also recognizing the economic opportunities presented by the country.
Reports suggest that the approval of the embassy may be announced before an anticipated trip by the Prime Minister to China. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper have indicated that their concerns have been addressed, with China agreeing to consolidate its diplomats onto the embassy site from various locations in London.
The government has suggested that the embassy could bring security benefits to the UK.
