Deadliest Ebola Outbreak in Congo Claims 2,325 Lives

The latest data from the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo revealed that the Ebola outbreak has resulted in the death of 2,325 individuals, making it the deadliest outbreak in the country’s history, surpassing the toll of the 2018-2020 outbreak. The country’s public health institute reported a total of 4,945 confirmed cases, with 101 new cases identified within the last 24 hours.

This outbreak, which marks the 17th occurrence in the country, has already become the largest in terms of the number of cases recorded, a milestone reached in late July. The current death toll has exceeded the previous worst outbreak in the country, with 2,299 deaths recorded during the 2018-2020 outbreak.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, caused by the Bundibugyo species, has no approved vaccines or treatments available. The case fatality ratio, indicating the proportion of fatalities among confirmed cases, has risen from about 20% in early June to 46%. This trend is attributed to persistent challenges in surveillance, case detection, and access to care, rather than an increase in the virus’s lethality.

Experts note that improvements in contact tracing and early treatment should ideally reduce the case fatality ratio as outbreaks progress. However, in the current situation, many cases are being detected late, reducing the likelihood of successful treatment, with some only identified posthumously in the community.

Efforts are underway to evaluate a few experimental vaccines and therapies, while existing Ebola treatments are being considered for potential protective effects. Limited evidence from animal studies forms the basis of these evaluations. The outbreak had previously spread to Uganda but was contained with minimal casualties before being declared over last month. Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with infected individuals’ bodily fluids and can lead to symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially fatal internal and external bleeding.
