The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has initiated the distribution of the first Cold Weather Payments for residents in 18 postcode areas across England. Eligible households in these northern regions will receive an additional £25 to assist with heating costs during the cold weather period. This initiative impacts a total of 6,000 households in the North of England, including parts of Cumbria, Northumberland, and the Scottish borders.
Pensions Minister Torsten Bell emphasized the importance of Cold Weather Payments in providing direct support to vulnerable households as temperatures drop. The government’s efforts, including the Pension Credit campaign and the Triple Lock commitment, aim to increase State Pension by up to £2,100 over the current parliamentary term, ensuring adequate support for pensioners this winter.
The list of postcodes eligible for the newly triggered payments can be found below, covering areas in Cumbria, Northumberland, and the Scottish Borders. Cold Weather Payments are available to recipients of various benefits in England and Wales, with a separate scheme in Northern Ireland and a different system in Scotland where heating bill support is provided annually without weather-specific triggers.
In England and Wales, payments are activated when average temperatures are forecasted to fall below zero for seven consecutive days. With subzero temperatures anticipated in many regions leading into the New Year, the scheme aims to assist an estimated 3.9 million eligible individuals, including 1.2 million receiving Pension Credit.
The DWP outlined the benefits that may qualify individuals for Cold Weather Payments, such as Pension Credit, Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance, ESA, Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest. While not all benefit recipients automatically receive Cold Weather Payments, eligibility criteria can be accessed through the provided link for further details.
Payments of £25 are directly deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, with a unique payment reference including the National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. Applicants do not need to submit a separate application for this financial support.
