“Federal Research Facility in Saskatchewan to Phase Out Operations”

The federal government has announced plans to gradually reduce activities at its research facility in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, within the next year. The seed increase unit will be relocated to the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre by 2028. This move aims to streamline operations and facilitate a smooth transition, with the unit operating at both locations in 2027.

The seed increase unit plays a crucial role in propagating and distributing breeder seeds to pedigreed growers for multiplication and eventual sale as certified seed. This decision follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the federal and provincial governments to preserve the Indian Head and Scott research farms, which were initially slated for closure along with five other research facilities nationwide.

Under the agreement, the province will assume control of the land as the federal government phases out its activities. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reiterated its commitment to supporting the Canadian seed sector, meeting breeder seed demands, and upholding pedigreed seed quality standards.

The future plans for the Indian Head and Scott research farms, particularly in the absence of the seed increase unit, remain uncertain. Provincial Agriculture Minister David Marit stated that ongoing discussions are underway with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to determine the next steps for the remaining land. Additionally, collaboration with the Saskatchewan agricultural industry is ongoing to outline a strategic vision for the future use of the research farmland.
