England’s chief medical officer mentioned seeing some improvement in the situation but stressed that hospitals are still under immense pressure. Professor Meghana Pandit expressed concerns about a potential worsening of conditions as temperatures are expected to drop.
A national cold health alert has been issued for all of England by the UK Health Security Agency, indicating the likelihood of significant impacts on healthcare services due to the weather. Recent NHS England data revealed that an average of 3,061 flu patients occupied hospital beds daily in the week ending December 21, down from the previous week.
Critical care beds saw an average of 117 flu patients daily, showing a decline from the week before. Despite some improvement, hospitals are operating under tremendous pressure, with 95% of beds occupied. Streeting commended NHS staff for their dedication amidst ongoing challenges and highlighted the importance of modernizing the healthcare system.
While there has been progress, hospitals are still facing high demands, and the public is urged to continue getting flu vaccinations to alleviate pressure. The NHS Confederation acknowledged the slight decrease in flu cases but emphasized that healthcare services are still strained, with bed occupancy levels exceeding safe limits.
