A global coalition of soccer fan organizations has initiated a petition demanding the resignation of FIFA President Gianni Infantino following his proposal to privatize future World Cup revenues. The petition, tagged as InfantinOut, additionally urges for a restructuring of FIFA to prevent similar controversies in the future.
The petition condemns Infantino’s aborted plan to commercialize the World Cup as an act of betrayal towards the sport. Noteworthy fan groups such as Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, and the Independent Supporters Council in North America have joined forces with approximately 40 national fan groups in this call for action.
Despite facing calls for his departure from key soccer bodies like UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation, Infantino remains defiant. The petition accuses him of a severe leadership failure, citing issues such as opaque decision-making, a cult of personality, and a lack of accountability within FIFA.
Infantino’s past controversial involvements, including the ill-fated European Super League project and the proposition to host World Cups biennially, are also highlighted in the petition. The fan coalition underlines the importance of Infantino stepping down for the preservation of FIFA’s credibility and the integrity of the game.
