Government to Ease Pubs’ Business Rates Burden

Share

Pubs are set to receive relief from the Government as plans are underway to reduce the impending increases in business rates.

The Treasury is on the verge of announcing a reversal to aid struggling pubs, with additional support expected to be revealed shortly. The anticipated measures will likely involve alterations to business rates and streamlining of licensing regulations.

This development follows pressure from the hospitality industry, prompting Chancellor Rachel Reeves to instruct officials to explore assistance options for the sector ahead of the holiday season. Businesses have expressed concerns over potential closures due to escalating expenses, leading to some Labour MPs being denied entry to pubs by displeased proprietors.

Originally, adjustments to business rates were scheduled for April alongside the phasing out of a Covid-related discount, which would have significantly raised costs for pubs. Ms. Reeves reduced the relief from 75% to 40% during the Budget, with plans to completely end it in April.

The proposed changes coincide with revisions to business rates for all non-residential properties, based on rental projections for 2024 and anticipated turnover.

Although Ms. Reeves highlighted the potential for lower rates for over 750,000 retail, hospitality, and leisure properties, the industry raised concerns about pubs facing substantial rate hikes. Consequently, the Government has reconsidered its stance following protests from farmers and adjustments to various social welfare benefits.

In response to the news, Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), expressed optimism, emphasizing the potential positive impact on pubs nationwide. Similarly, CAMRA Chairman Ash Corbett-Collins urged the government to swiftly implement measures to fulfill promises of reduced bills for pubs.

However, the relief effort appears to be limited to the pub sector, prompting UKHospitality chief Kate Nicholls to advocate for broader support encompassing all hospitality businesses. Additionally, Carolyn Harris MP stressed the importance of empowering the spirits sector to ensure the survival and prosperity of pubs.

Cabinet Minister Pat McFadden acknowledged the economic and cultural significance of pubs in the UK, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting the industry.

The Mirror’s “Your Pub Needs You” campaign has been advocating for the preservation of pubs in Britain, reflecting the public’s concern for these establishments.
